The Bible has transformed more lives than any book in the history of the world. It has shaped the course of western civilization. Yet for many it remains a difficult book to understand. As a result, its message and its power has little impact on our lives.

GROUP DISCUSSION: Today’s study is about allowing the Bible, the word of God, to shape our lives as God intends. Imagine that all the bibles on earth were destroyed one hundred years ago. How might your life be different than it is now?

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Recall ways that God has spoken to you through the bible at different moments in your life. What patterns do you see? Thanks God for communicating with you.

In 2 Kings, Josiah and the nation of Israel experienced the transforming power of the word of God. For fifty-seven years prior to King Josiah’s reign, the Book of the Law (the Scriptures) had been neglected. Spiritually, the nation of Israel was in shambles. Read 2 Kings 22:1-23:7

1. What do you learn about Josiah from this passage?

2. Why does king Josiah send his secretary, shaphan, to the temple of the Lord (22:3-7)?

3. Notice the ironic fact that the book of the law is found during temple repairs (22:8-10). In what ways are we guilty of engaging in a flurry of religious activities while neglecting God’s word?

4. How does Josiah respond when he hears the words of the Book of the law (22:11-13)?

5. How does Huldah’s prophecy summarize the two attitudes we can have toward God’s Word (22:14-20)? What are the ultimate consequences of these attitudes?

6. What do we learn in 23:1-3 about Josiah’s commitment to the scriptures?

7. Describe the condition of the temple before Josiah’s reforms (22:4-7)?

8. What does the condition of the temple reveal about what happens when we neglect God’s Word?

9. How does Josiah’s Commitment to the scriptures affect the nation of Judah (22:4-7)?

10. How would you compare your attitude and obedience to God’s word with Josiah’s?

11. If you had Josiah’s Commitment to scripture, how might your be different?

12. What practical step can you take to make the word of God more central in your life and daily activities?

Ask God to give you a greater love for his word.

Now or later

Read the famous parable of the seed in Luke 8:4-13. Note how the seed that falls on the first three soils is extinguished. What hindrances keep God’s word from bearing fruit in your life?

Hey dim psalm! Caleb here! Really missing you guys. have been able to catch up with some of you over this short 24hours that I am given out of camp, spending most of my time resting up at home. I just came out from my field camp in the jungle. 5 days living in the jungle and being trained how to fight even when your body and mind is experiencing fatigue.

So many things to share with us but so little time. Forgive me for not being able to be there for you guys in the midst of your O’s but I had the assurance from God that He sees each and every effort being put in and I challenge us to put our trust in God for the results alright! Did devotion this morning at home. Wouldn’t be able to come out because I decided to rest up at home. Fallen really sick. Youth camp is coming! encourage those of us who can to sign up alright!

Belonging To God

Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. Psalm 73:23

Fully conscious of his own lost state and of the deceitfulness and vileness of his nature and thoughts, King David sang, “Nevertheless I am continually with You.” “Nevertheless”—notwithstanding all the foolishness and ignorance that he had just been confessing to God, David knew beyond a shadow of doubt that he was saved, accepted, and blessed by the constant presence of God. What this means for us is that as believers, we too need to be like David and know for a fact that since we belong to Christ, we are continually with God.

We are continually on His mind; He is always thinking of us and for our good. We need to make this declaration of faith to God, to ourselves and also to our enemies. The devil is the accuser of the brethren and he constantly wants to shame us for our mistakes and failures. The Psalmist says: “I am continually with You.” I am continually before God’s eye; the eye of the Lord never sleeps, but is perpetually watching over my welfare. I am continually in His hand, so that none will be able to pluck me from Him. I am continually in His favor and He loves me. I am continually in His heart and He thinks about me every day, all throughout the day.

He also says: “You hold me by my right hand.” God’s love continually reaches out to me. He always provides for me and guides me in my life. David expressed to God what the Shulamite woman says in Song of Solomon 8:6-7, “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death … Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the fl oods drown it.” We need to meditate on the extent of God’s amazing love toward us! Although we are not perfect, God sees us in Christ. He looks upon us as wearing Christ’s garments, washed in His blood; so that we can stand accepted in His presence. Ephesians 3:17-19 says, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be fi lled with all the fullness of God.”

If your heart is weary and vexed like King David in this Psalm, here is what you should say, “Nevertheless” … Say it from the depths of your heart, and receive the assurance and joy it brings. “Nevertheless I am continually with You.”
